Katherine Heigl Hairstyle for the InStyle Cover
HOW-TO: Stylist Campbell McAuley applied lightweight straightening gel to damp hair, and then blow-dried with a round boar bristle brush. After setting the hair with large Velcro rollers, he used a paddle brush and straightening iron to soften curls.

Get the Look: Katherine Heigl’s Emmy Beauty
Katherine Heigl’s elegant Emmy took its inspiration from another cool blonde, Grace Kelly. Makeup artist Monika Blunder kept the eye neutral, first applying Ombre d’Eau, a liquid-y eyeshadow, in Sand, $30, then brushing on a pressed eyeshadow in the champagne colored Dessert-Rose, $39, on top of that to give her eyes “a sparkling glow.” She dotted Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Ebene, $27, between her lashes, and then applied three coats of Inimitable Mascara in Noir, $28, on the upper lashes. Blunder brought out her cheekbones by contouring the hollows first with Powder Blush in Nude, $40, and then brushing the tops of the cheeks with Narcisse, $40, a light pink color. Before applying lipstick, she used Lip Definer in Red, $29, to fill in the lips. For Heigl’s bright red lips, Blunder chose Rouge Allure Lipstick in Lover, $30, because of its pink undertones. She finished the look by brushing on a bit of translucent powder to “help it stay throughout the show.”
Hair stylist Campbell McAuley created a complementary old school– yet modern– style to go with the makeup and went for a cool twist on the bun. He put Katherine’s hair in Velcro rollers when it was still wet, blew it dry and sprayed with Frederic Fekkai Coiff Fini Sheer Hold Hairspray, $23. Then he removed the curlers, except for two in the front and brushed out the curls, using Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream, $20, to set the hair. He divided the hair into three sections and then wrapped each section in a different direction to create three separate buns. He took the two front curlers out and worked back into the hairstyle to create a soft, touchable look on the top.

On Sunday night, Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl—that's high-gull, not high-gel —won her first Emmy. Celebrity-hair god CAMPBELL MCAULEY gives us the lowdown. He's the affable Aussie who tends to Hollywood's alpha locks-and created Oh's hot cover-girl look.
Sandra Oh showed up at L.A.'s Quixote Studio wearing a major, chunky skull ring that drew oohs and aahs. Her secret: It's actually a $10 novelty Secret Santa gift from Grey's Anatomy costar Justin Chambers. The studio shook with techno and hard rock until Oh requested Björk-all she needed to return to her ballet roots and dance for the camera. The shoot was so fun that Oh stayed behind afterward to hang and have a beer with the crew. Then on to a fitting for her molten--silver Golden Globes dress.
WHAT WAS THE CHALLENGE?
MCAULEY: Sandra has great, thick hair, so I wanted to give it vibrancy and sex appeal and go for lovely and luscious. We started out tamer, but the more I shook it out, the stronger the images got-and Sandra can go there. She's such a grounded, true person; she really let go.
WHAT'S THE MAGIC TRICK?
MCAULEY: A large curling iron, a mixture of hairspray and moisture cream-and girls, never use a brush. You scrunch dry and finger-shake the hair, then twist the curl with the iron in a messy way. Apply hair-spray while upside down, then throw your hair back. Yes, we're starting to see a fuller look. I'm loving it-it holds more life. Straight hair is so done; with fullness you can let it breathe a little.

Oscar Red Carpet Beauty: How to Get Kate Winslet's Hair
Kate Winslet looked simply radiant at the Oscars Sunday night in her mint green Valentino gown.I loved her dress, her jewels and her gorgeous and classic hair. Last night I spoke with hairstylist Campbell McAuley, about how he created Kate's old Hollywood style sweeping soft waves secured in a low side chignon. He said,
"Because Kate's dress was lovely and simple, the hair was styled the same way to create an elegant look."

* Campbell explained it is crucial to apply a smoothing product when the hair is wet. He used Smooth Hair, $17.50, when the hair is wet. This adds shine and prevents frizz.
* Begin by blow drying hair straight. Next, when Campbell was ready to begin styling, he used a medium sized curling iron around the front of her face for volume. Try Enzo Milano's 25 mm Grande Curling Iron, $129.95.
* Then, brush out the hair completely until it's smooth and put it in a side ponytail. Then run a nickel sized amount of Technician Color-Protecting Glaze, $20, into the palms of your hands and apply it all over the hair to add even more shine!
* Next, add a little extra hair (either a weave or extensions) to the ponytail so that it's fuller and thicker and then shape it into a side knot and secure it with bobby pins.
* Lastly, mist hair all over with a light hairspray for hold.
